LUSAKA, Zambia, July 24, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Today the Government has adopted a new strategy for development cooperation with Zambia for the period 2008-2011. The new cooperation strategy will bring an increase in Swedish support for Zambia compared with previous years.

“In recent years Zambia has developed in a positive direction, in terms of both the political situation and poverty reduction. The country has also shown that it is able to put the aid it receives to good use. However, there are still problems, such as the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and in the health sector, so we consider that the support we provide to Zambia should increase,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson.

Sweden´s cooperation with Zambia aims to help Zambia implement its own development strategy and builds on Sweden´s policy for global development, together with the Swedish Government´s three thematic priorities: human rights and democracy, environment and climate, and gender equality and the role of women in development. Cooperation will focus on three sectors: energy, health and agriculture.

In 2007, Sweden´s cooperation with Zambia amounted to SEK 356 million.
