Zambia Sugar PLC (ZSUG.ZM), the country’s leading sugar producer, has reported a rise in vandalism at the Zambian Kwacha 840 billion ($244 million) sugar expansion project, state media reported Monday.

The Times quoted Zambia Sugar’s corporate affairs manager, Lovemore Sievu, as saying that unless the police stop the vandalism, the expansion project is likely to fail.

“The management is worried at the increased cases of vandalism at the sugarcane expansion project. Every day we receive reports of the polythene material being stolen,” he was quoted as saying.

Sievu added that a water dam and irrigation canals for the project had also been vandalized.

The expansion project is aimed at increasing the company’s annual sugar output to 440,000 metric tons from 250,000 tons by the end of next year. -By Nicholas Bariyo, Dow Jones Newswires; +256 75 262 4615; bariyonic@yahoo.co.uk
