Radio Phoenix, a private radio station in Lusaka, was gutted on Friday leaving the station’s equipment destroyed. According to local media reports on Saturday the fire, which is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault, swept through the entire 13th floor of Zimco House, where the radio station was located.

This is the second time that Radio Phoenix has been gutted, the first being in 1997 when the station was based at Society House in Lusaka.

Radio Phoenix proprietor Errol Hickey who watched helplessly as the station was engulfed in flames said he could not quantify the extent of the damage but stated that it was substantial.

He explained that recording studios, videos and computers were damaged in the in ferno.
