Zambia former spy Chief Xavier Chungu this morning stepped into a Lusaka Magistrates Court after being on the run for close to five years. The aging but physically fit Chungu arrived at the New Magistrates Court Complex around 8.45 and was guided straight into a fully packed courtroom.
A horde of curious on-lookers and sympathizers jammed the courts complex to try and take a fresh look at the man alleged to have masterminded what has come to be known as “plunder of national resources”.

The former intelligence boss left Zambia on June 01, 2004 and went into a self imposed exile at the prime of his corruption court litigation.

He at the time charged that he left Zambia because he feared for his life and decided to jump bail and seek refugee in a country suspected to be Mozambique.

He has not made any public comment since his re-arrest last week at Lusaka International Airport but he has been in constant communication with his lawyer Nicholas Chanda.
